Stockholm, Schweden – Die Gemeinde Flen in Mittelschweden wurde vom schwedischen Hersteller von Dünnschichtsolarzellen Midsummer als Standort für seine neue 200-MW-Megafabrik zur Produktion von Dünnschichtsolarzellen für Europa ausgewählt Markt.

(WK-intern) – Die teilweise durch den EU-Innovationsfonds finanzierte Fabrik wird über eine maximale jährliche Produktionskapazität von 200 MW CIGS-Dünnschichtsolarzellen verfügen – dünn, leicht, flexibel und mit einem äußerst geringen Klima-Fußabdruck.

Es wird voraussichtlich im Jahr 2026 mit der Produktion beginnen und im Vollbetrieb rund 200 Mitarbeiter beschäftigen.

„Wir hatten eine Reihe von Standorten in Schweden zur Auswahl, aber Flen erfüllte alle unsere Anforderungen, z. geeignete Räumlichkeiten, eine zuverlässige Stromversorgung und insgesamt eine etablierte lokale Infrastruktur, die für diese Art der Produktion günstig ist. Wir haben das Gefühl, dass wir für unsere Investition starke Unterstützung von der Gemeinde Flen erhalten haben und auch weiterhin erhalten werden. Flen ist auch geografisch gut gelegen für den Transport von Vormaterialien und Fertigprodukten in ganz Schweden und ganz Europa“, sagte Eric Jaremalm, CEO von Midsummer.

Midsummer wird die Räumlichkeiten im September dieses Jahres übernehmen, sofern die EU den Start des Projekts DAWN mit dem Standort der Fabrik in diesen Räumlichkeiten genehmigt. Midsummer beginnt dann mit der Anpassung der Räumlichkeiten und der Installation von Maschinen für einen voraussichtlichen Produktionsstart im Jahr 2026. Die maximale Produktionskapazität wird voraussichtlich im Jahr 2028 erreicht.

Midsummer wird sich auf leichte und umweltverträgliche Solarmodule konzentrieren, vor allem für gewerblich-industrielle Dächer mit geringer Tragfähigkeit, die dem Gewicht herkömmlicher Siliziumpaneele nicht standhalten können.

Auf dem Gelände im Zentrum von Flen finden seit den 1860er Jahren industrielle Aktivitäten statt. Bolinder-Munktell stellte dort Mähdrescher her, bevor es zum globalen Zentrum von Volvo für die Reparatur schwerer Motoren wurde. Das Grundstück ist Eigentum der Gemeinde Flen. Die Räumlichkeiten sind gut für den Midsummer-Betrieb geeignet und der Standort in der Gemeinde Flen mit der Industriegeschichte der Region bietet gute Voraussetzungen für die Personalrekrutierung.

Midsummer’s mega factory for the production of thin film solar cells will be located in Flen

Stockholm, Sweden – The municipality of Flen in central Sweden has been chosen by Swedish manufacturer of thin-film solar cells Midsummer as the location for its new 200 MW mega factory for the production of thin film solar cells for the European market.

The factory, which is partially funded by the EU Innovation Fund, will have a maximum annual production capacity of 200 MW of CIGS thin film solar cells – thin, light, flexible and with an extremely low climate footprint. It is expected to commence production in 2026 and, when fully operational, will employ around 200 people.

“We had a number of locations in Sweden to choose from, but Flen fulfilled all our requirements regarding e.g. suitable premises, reliable electricity supply and overall an established local infrastructure that is favorable for this type of production. We feel that we have received and will receive strong support from the Flen municipality for our investment. Flen is also geographically well located for the transport of input materials and finished products across Sweden and all of Europe,” said Eric Jaremalm, CEO, Midsummer.

„We are delighted to have attracted what will be Europe’s largest factory for the production of thin film solar cells in a venture that puts Flen on the map in renewable energy. Midsummer will take over the premises in September this year, given that the EU approves the start of the project called DAWN with the location of the factory in these premises. Midsummer then begins to adapt the premises and install machinery for an expected start of production in 2026. It is expected to reach maximum production capacity in 2028.

Midsummer will focus on light and environmentally sustainable solar panels for primarily low load-bearing commercial and industrial roofs that cannot withstand the weight of traditional silicon panels.

The premises in central Flen have hosted industrial activity since the 1860s. Bolinder-Munktell manufactured combine harvesters there before it became Volvo’s global center for the repair of heavy engines. The property is owned by the municipality of Flen. The premises are well adapted for Midsummer’s operations and the location in the municipality of Flen with the region’s industrial history offers good conditions for the recruitment of staff.
