Ampaire gibt RED Aircraft GmbH als Lieferanten von Hubkolbenmotoren für Hybrid-Elektro-Eco-Caravan bekannt

Ampaire gab heute einen wichtigen exklusiven Lieferanten für das hybrid-elektrische Antriebssystem bekannt, das es für sein Eco Caravan-Flugzeug entwickelt, ein Upgrade der aktuellen Cessna Grand Caravan.

Ampaire wird einen Selbstzündungsmotor der RED Aircraft AO3-Serie mit einer Nennleistung von 550 PS (405 kW) in einer integrierten Parallelkonfiguration verwenden. Der RED-Motor liefert die Grundleistung und das elektrische Ampaire-System liefert die Spitzenleistung.

Gemäß den Bedingungen einer Absichtserklärung zwischen den Unternehmen werden die beiden an der Kommerzialisierung von Flugzeugen mit Elektroantrieb arbeiten, wobei Ampaire komplette hybrid-elektrische Antriebssysteme entwickelt und für verschiedene Anwendungen bis zu 800 PS zertifiziert, während RED Aircraft entwickeln, zertifizieren und liefern wird Jet A/SAF-kompatible Triebwerkssubsysteme an Ampaire.

Das neue Antriebssystem für den Eco Caravan bietet den Nutzern erhebliche Vorteile und wird das erste einer Reihe von elektrifizierten Starrflügelflugzeugen sein, die den CO2-Fußabdruck der Luftfahrt reduzieren.

Der Kraftstoffverbrauch wird auf kürzeren Fahrten um 70 Prozent und auf längeren Fahrten um 50 Prozent reduziert, mit entsprechend größeren Reduzierungen der CO2-Emissionen aufgrund des Beitrags des Elektromotors und der optimierten Nutzung des RED-Motors.

Das RED-Triebwerk bietet einen hohen thermodynamischen Wirkungsgrad, der doppelt so hoch ist wie bei einem vergleichbaren Turboprop-Triebwerk.

Die RED-Engine ist JET A/SAF-kompatibel. Beim SAF-Einsatz haben die CO2-Emissionen das Potenzial für Netto-Null.

Die Anschaffungskosten und die laufende Wartung des Triebwerks sind wesentlich niedriger als bei einem Turboprop-Triebwerk. Die Haltbarkeit und Zuverlässigkeit des RED-Triebwerks wurde in Anwendungen wie dem Air Tractor AT 301, einem landwirtschaftlichen Flugzeug, und dem Kunstflugtrainer YAK-52 demonstriert.

Die Betriebskosten für Eco Caravans sind je nach Streckenstruktur des Betreibers um 25 bis 40 Prozent niedriger.

Ampaire führte im April 2022 die ersten Bodenläufe mit Eco Caravan-Hybridantrieb durch und plant, das Flugzeug in der zweiten Jahreshälfte zu fliegen. Das Unternehmen arbeitet mit der FAA zusammen, um bis 2024 eine ergänzende Musterzulassung (STC) zu erhalten.

Der Eco Caravan behält die Nutzlastkapazitäten des Grand Caravan und befördert bis zu 11 Passagiere oder 2.500 Pfund Fracht. Die Reichweite verbessert sich auf 1.100 Seemeilen.

Ampaire Announces RED Aircraft GmbH as Reciprocating Engine Supplier for Hybrid-Electric Eco Caravan

• Both Companies Envision Collaboration on Additional Hybrid-Electric Programs

Ampaire today announced a key exclusive supplier for the hybrid-electric propulsion system it is developing for its Eco Caravan aircraft, an upgrade to the current Cessna Grand Caravan. Ampaire will use a RED Aircraft AO3 series compression ignition engine rated to 550 hp (405 kW) in an integrated parallel configuration. The RED engine provides the base power and the Ampaire electrical system provides the peak power.

Under the terms of an MOU between the companies, the two will work to commercialize electrified propulsion aircraft, with Ampaire developing complete hybrid-electric propulsion systems and certifying them for various applications up to 800 hp, while RED Aircraft will develop, certify, and supply Jet A/SAF compatible engine subsystems to Ampaire.

The new propulsion system for the Eco Caravan offers substantial benefits to users and will be the first in a series of electrified fixed-wing aircraft that reduce aviation’s carbon footprint.

Fuel consumption is reduced by 70 percent on shorter trips and 50 percent on longer ones with greater corresponding reductions in CO2 emissions due to the contribution of the electric motor and the optimized use of the RED engine.

The RED engine provides high thermodynamic efficiency that is 2X better than a comparable turboprop engine.

The RED engine is JET A/SAF compatible. With SAF usage, CO2 emissions have the potential for net zero.

Engine initial cost and ongoing maintenance are substantially lower than for a turboprop engine. Durability and reliability of the RED engine has been demonstrated in applications such as the Air Tractor AT 301, an agricultural aircraft, and the YAK-52 aerobatic trainer.

Eco Caravan operating cost is 25-40 percent lower depending on an operator’s route structure.

Ampaire conducted the first Eco Caravan hybrid powertrain ground runs in April 2022, with plans to fly the aircraft in the second half of the year. The company is working with the FAA to achieve supplemental type certificate (STC) approval by 2024.

The Eco Caravan will retain the payload capabilities of the Grand Caravan, carrying up to 11 passengers or 2,500 pounds of cargo. Range improves to 1,100 nautical miles.
