Energizing the pink city of Jaipur

(WK-intern) – ABB is providing a range of innovative technologies and solutions for the city of Jaipur, northern India, to help build the electrical infrastructure of a rapidly expanding urban area.

Jaipur, established in 1726, is home to some of India’s most famous heritage sites.

Founded by Maharaja Sawai Jai Singh II, after whom the city is named, Jaipur is famous for its forts, palaces and temples. Due to the trademark color of its traditional buildings and avenues, it is also known as the ‘Pink City’.

Today Jaipur is home to a burgeoning population of more than three million people and approximately half of this population is below 25 years of age. To meet the expectations of this young population, the government has major plans for modernization and commercial development of the city as well as to enhance basic facilities such as healthcare, educational facilities and sports centers.

To help meet these ambitions, local authorities are keen to rapidly build the city’s infrastructure amidst challenges posed by a densely populated city juxtaposed with valuable heritage sites. ABB’s innovative technologies are helping resolve some of these challenges.

For example, it has supplied substation technology with innovative hybrid switchgear that considerably reduces space requirements, releasing precious land for other purposes. The SMS cricket stadium, a major hospital and several government buildings in central Jaipur are fed by this power technology.

ABB has also supplied electrical infrastructure, control and automation solutions for the Jaipur metro, which has recently begun operations, helping ease commuters’ daily lives. ABB has a range of power and automation products and solutions for the rail industry and a vast global installed base, with rail a strategic focus sector for the company.

With urban growth set to continue – and 80 percent of it estimated to be in Asia and Africa – expertise and experience in this type of technology will support India and countries across the world in addressing the challenges this megatrend brings.
