Siemens addresses needs of a future industry: battery cell production

Nuremberg, Germany. The Siemens Industry Automation Division has put together a product and solution package which it is offering specifically to machine builders and manufacturers involved in lithium ion battery cell production. Siemens offers a comprehensive portfolio of automation and drive solutions designed to specifically address the needs of this future industry.

Drawing energy from regenerative sources such as sunlight and wind power is one thing – storing it and making it available at some time in the future is quite another. Lithium-ion batteries are playing an increasingly important role in the integration of energy generated from renewable sources. They are also gaining in significance as an integral element of electric cars.

The high costs involved in the manufacture of battery cells is currently causing something of a stumbling block to the breakthrough of these high-performance energy storage batteries. Battery production needs to be far more heavily automated and the manufacturing process further optimized before the price level and product quality demanded by the market can be realized.

Recognizing this need, Siemens has now put together a special product and solution portfolio encompassing automation and drive solutions as well as simulation software to cover the entire value chain. Based on the standardized and seamless Totally Integrated Automation product spectrum, the package covers every one of the process steps involved in battery cell production.

Siemens is also able to draw on comprehensive technological expertise to help drive forward this ground-breaking industry in areas such as converting, assembly and logistics. The company will be unveiling its new offering for battery cell production at the SPS/IPC/Drives 2011 in Nuremberg.
