Official inauguration of Ørsted’s Borssele 1 & 2 Offshore Wind Farm ‘One Year Borssele 1 & 2 & Future of Green Energy’ event in Vlissingen Today, on 6 September 2021, Ørsted’s Borssele 1 & 2 Offshore Wind Farm in the Netherlands will be officially inaugurated. The wind farm has been in full operation since the last quarter of 2020. The official inauguration, which was delayed by COVID-19, also celebrates the wind farm’s first anniversary. The ‘Future of Green Energy’ will also play a central role in the event. Borssele 1 & 2, which is Ørsted’s first offshore wind farm in the Netherlands, has a capacity of 752 MW, making it the largest offshore wind farm in the Netherlands and the second largest operating offshore wind farm in the world. Mads Nipper, CEO, Ørsted, says: “Borssele 1 & 2 was an important milestone for the green energy transition and for Ørsted. With Borssele 1 & 2 as the first step, we wish to make a significant contribution to the Dutch transition from fossil-based to green energy. The Netherlands is a strategic market for us due to its ambitious targets on offshore wind and hydrogen. The Netherlands are among the global frontrunners in the energy transition, and we at Ørsted are committed to contribute to keeping this position.” In 1991, Ørsted built the world’s first offshore wind farm in Denmark. Since then, Ørsted has constructed and operated more than 25 offshore wind farms in Europe, Asia Pacific, and North America. The 25th wind turbine installed at Borssele 1 & 2 was Ørsted’s installed wind turbine number 1,500. Dilan Yesilgoz-Zegerius, State Secretary for Economic Affairs and Climate, says: “Borssele 1 & 2 was the first large-scale offshore wind farm in the Netherlands. I’m very glad to see that the wind farm has been operational for a year now, delivering clean energy to one million households in the Netherlands. Offshore wind energy now plays a crucial role in achieving our climate objectives, and I invite Ørsted to keep participating in realising the energy transition.” Steven Engels, General Manager Benelux, Ørsted, says: “After our breakthrough bid of 72.7 EUR per MWh in 2016, we delivered what we promised, on time and on budget. By introducing additional safety measures offshore as well as onshore, we were able to continue construction during a global pandemic and complete this large-scale clean energy project. With Norges Bank Investment Management, we also welcomed a very professional partner as co-owner of the wind farm. After having achieved these major milestones, we’re looking forward to continuing as a reliable partner in the Dutch energy transition in the future.” Key facts Borssele 1 & 2: Owner: Ørsted & NBIM Total capacity: 752 MW Wind turbines, Siemens Gamesa: 8 MW Size of the site: 112 km2 Number of wind turbines: 94 Foundation: monopiles Offshore and onshore grid: TSO TenneT Operational: Q4 2020 Water depth: 14-36 m Distance to coast from Westkapelle: 23 km Operation and maintenance base: Vlissingen Equal to yearly power consumption of: 1 million households Main suppliers: Siemens Gamesa, Sif, Bladt, EEW SPC, EEW OSB, Nexans Installation: DEME Offshore, Van Oord Today’s event Today’s ‘One Year Borssele 1 & 2 & Future of Green Energy’ will take place in Vlissingen.
