Ensorcia kündigt Investitionen von mehr als 350 Millionen Dollar in Europa und Südamerika an, um die Lithiumgewinnung und -umwandlung zu entwickeln

• Das Unternehmen gibt die Eröffnung seiner Tochtergesellschaft Sorcia Europe und den Willen zum Bau einer Lithiumhydroxid-Umwandlungsanlage in Europa mit einer Anfangsinvestition von mehr als 200 Millionen EUR bekannt. Mehrere Standorte werden in Betracht gezogen, wobei Frankreich derzeit ganz oben auf der Liste steht.
• Auf Einladung des Leaders on Purpose-Panels, das diesen Freitag, den 20. Januar, beim Weltwirtschaftsforum stattfindet, plädiert Daniel Layton für eine strategische Allianz zwischen Europa und Lateinamerika, die Fortschritte bei den Projekten ermöglichen würde, die für die nachhaltige Nutzung von Lithium unerlässlich sind .

Ensorcia, Spezialist für die Extraktion und Umwandlung von hochreinem Lithium, gibt den Bau einer Anlage in Europa bekannt, in der Frankreich untersucht wird, die der Umwandlung von Lithiumhydroxid in „Batteriequalität“ gewidmet ist. Die Anfangsinvestition beträgt 200 Millionen EUR (216 Millionen Dollar), wobei die Schaffung von über 100 direkten Arbeitsplätzen auf dem Spiel steht. Die Anlage soll 2025 mit einer installierten Kapazität von 20.000 Tonnen LCE pro Jahr und einer Ramp-Up-Kapazität von 40.000 Tonnen in Betrieb gehen.

Daniel Layton, Vorsitzender von Ensorcia, reiste im Rahmen des Weltwirtschaftsforums nach Davos und nutzte diese wichtige Ankündigung, um die Aufmerksamkeit von Behörden und privaten Akteuren zwischen Europa und Südamerika – insbesondere Frankreich und Chile – zu fordern. Für ihn ist es dringend erforderlich, dass schnell eine effektive und ernsthafte Zusammenarbeit entsteht, um die Produktion und den Export von Lithium zu erleichtern, wenn wir die CO2-Reduktionsverpflichtungen bis 2035 erfüllen wollen.

Lithium ist ein essentielles Mineral für die Herstellung von Elektrobatterien, Schlüsselkomponenten von kohlenstofffreien Fahrzeugen. Die heute verwendeten Extraktionstechniken sind jedoch extrem umweltschädlich, energieaufwändig und schädlich für Ökosysteme – sowohl für Sole als auch für Spodumen.

Die wichtigsten Weltreserven dieses «weissen Goldes» befinden sich im goldenen Dreieck: Argentinien, Chile und Bolivien. Trotz starker Marktnachfrage und neuer umweltfreundlicher Technologien, wie IBATs DLE (Direct Lithium Extraction), die Ensorcia verwendet, entwickeln sich lokale Vorschriften nur langsam und bleiben ein Hindernis für die Produktion und den Export von Lithium. Auf diese Weise könnte Chile in den nächsten Jahren jährlich von mehr als 2 Milliarden US-Dollar an zusätzlichen Steuern und Lizenzgebühren pro 100.000 Tonnen Lithium „Batteriequalität“ profitieren – und vollständig von den hohen Lithiumpreisen profitieren, bevor sie sinken.

Frankreich seinerseits ist bereit, einen „grünen“ Automobilsektor zu schaffen und befürwortet seine Ambitionen in Bezug auf Souveränität und Energieunabhängigkeit, ohne jedoch über ausreichende Lithiumressourcen zu verfügen, bis die Ausbeutung der lithinhaltigen Mica-Minen im Zentralmassiv durch die USA abgeschlossen ist Ende des Jahrzehnts.

Für Daniel Layton scheint die Antwort jedoch offensichtlich: „Die Zukunft der Menschheit liegt nicht in der Entglobalisierung, sondern in Kooperation und Kokonstruktion. Die Auswirkungen des Klimawandels gehen uns alle an, und es liegt an uns allen, gemeinsam Lösungen zu finden. Wenn uns die Covid-Krise mit den Exzessen der Globalisierung und der industriellen Abhängigkeit konfrontiert hat, hat sie uns auch gezeigt, dass es möglich ist, schnelle und effektive Antworten zu finden, wenn wir unsere Kräfte um ein gemeinsames Ziel vereinen. Dafür muss jeder sein Konto finden, aber vor allem müssen wir die planetarischen Herausforderungen des Klimawandels priorisieren.“

Ensorcia, dessen Hauptbetriebe jetzt in Argentinien und Chile angesiedelt sind, hat derzeit mehrere Projekte zur Errichtung verschiedener Lithiumverarbeitungsanlagen in Südamerika, Europa und Nordamerika in der Prüfung. Die Eröffnung des europäischen Werks wäre der erste europäische Schritt in einem globalen Expansionsprojekt als Antwort auf die wachsende und langfristige Nachfrage nach Lithium für die Expansion des EV-Marktes. Ensorcia, specialist in the extraction and transformation of high purity Lithium, announces the construction of a plant in Europe, France being under study, dedicated to the transformation of “battery-grade” Lithium hydroxide. The plant should start its operations in 2025 with an installed capacity of 20 thousand tons LCE per year, and a ramp up capacity of 40 thousand tons.

Traveling to Davos as part of the World Economic Forum, Daniel Layton, Chairman of Ensorcia, took advantage of this major announcement to claim for attention of public authorities and private actors between Europe and South America – especially France and Chile. For him, it is urgent that effective and serious cooperation emerges quickly to facilitate the production and export of Lithium if we want to meet the CO2 reduction commitments by 2035.

Lithium is an essential mineral for the production of electric batteries, key components of carbon-free vehicles. However, extraction techniques used today are extremely polluting, energy-consuming and harmful to ecosystems – both for brines and spodumene.

The main world reserves of this «white gold» are in the golden triangle: Argentina, Chile, and Bolivia. However, despite strong market demands and new environmentally friendly technologies, such as IBAT’s DLE (Direct Lithium Extraction) that Ensorcia is using, local regulations are slow to evolve and remain a brake on the production and export of Lithium. In this way, Chile could benefit yearly from more than $2 billion in additional taxes and royalties over the next few years, for every one hundred thousand tons of Lithium «battery grade» – fully benefitting from the high Lithium prices before they go down.

France, for its part, is willing to create a «green» automotive sector and is advocating its ambitions in terms of sovereignty and energy independence, without however having sufficient Lithium resources, pending the exploitation of the Mica Lithiniferous mines in the Central Massif by the end of the decade.

For Daniel Layton, however, the answer seems obvious: “the future of humanity does not lie in de-globalization, but in cooperation and co-construction. The impact of climate change concerns us all and it is up to all of us, together, to find the solutions. If the Covid crisis has confronted us with the excesses of globalization and industrial dependence, it has also shown us that it is possible to find rapid and effective answers when we unite our forces around a common objective. For this, everyone must find their account, but above all, we must prioritize the planetary challenges imposed by climate change”.

Ensorcia, whose main operations are now based in Argentina and Chile, currently has several projects under study for the creation of different Lithium processing plants in South America, Europe and North America. The opening of the European plant would be the first European step in a global expansion project, as an answer to the growing and long-term demand for Lithium for the EV market expansion. Following the vision defined by Daniel Layton, Ensorcia wishes to become the world leader in sustainable Lithium and the guarantor of the protection of ecosystems, populations and the industrial independence of countries committed to the planet.
