(WK-intern) – Das Startup-Ökosystem von Vilnius und Litauen bringt jedes Jahr Innovationen in mehreren Sektoren hervor.

Die diesjährigen prominentesten Akteure konzentrieren sich auf Technologie, grüne Energie, Cleantech und Reisen.

17. Januar 2024. Das litauische Startup-Ökosystem umfasst fast 900 Startups, die im Jahr 2023 rund 273 Millionen Euro an Investitionen einbrachten, wobei Startups mit Fokus auf Cybersicherheit und grüne Energie die Führung übernehmen. Die wichtigsten Akteure, die man im Jahr 2024 im Auge behalten sollte, konzentrieren sich auf Technologie, grüne Energie, Cleantech, Cybersicherheit und andere Lösungen.

Die Startups, die die Branche im Jahr 2024 aufmischen werden, wurden am 11. Januar bei den Vilnius TechFusion Startup Awards ausgezeichnet. Die Unternehmen, die in diesem Jahr zum Wachstum des Startup-Ökosystems in Vilnius und Litauen beigetragen haben, konkurrierten in sieben Kategorien: Startup des Jahres (PVcase) und Rising Star (Ovoko), Highlight des Jahres (Eröffnung von Cyber City), Newcomer des Jahres (Plug and Play), Ökosystemheld (Tomas Okmanas und Eimantas Sabaliauskas), Tech for Good (PVCase) und Publikumsliebling (RatePunk).

Die Kandidaten für das nächste litauische Einhorn konzentrieren sich auf grünes Kapital

Cleantech gewinnt im litauischen Startup-Ökosystem an Bedeutung. 60 Unternehmen suchen kontinuierlich nach Lösungen in den Bereichen Transport, saubere Energie, Ressourcen und anderen Sektoren. Als grüne Hauptstadt Europas für 2025 gibt Vilnius einen starken Schub für die Start-ups der Branche – sechs Risikokapitalfonds investieren bis zu 2 Millionen Euro in ausgewählte Start-ups, ein aktives Netzwerk von Angel-Investoren finanziert vielversprechende Start-ups in der Frühphase sowie zahlreiche Programme und Projekte bieten Beratung und Hilfe an.

Mit einem Fokus auf erneuerbare Energien trägt PVcase zu Cleantech-Innovationen bei, indem es Software für den Entwurf von Solaranlagen entwickelt. Das Startup war eines der Startups mit den größten Investitionen im vergangenen Jahr – das Unternehmen zog 100 Millionen Euro ein.

Ein weiteres Startup, das sich auf umweltfreundliche Geschäftspraktiken konzentriert, ist Ovoko, einer der größten Online-B2C-Marktplätze in Europa. Das Startup bietet eine Plattform zur Suche und zum Kauf gebrauchter Autoteile. Dadurch entfällt die mühsame Beschaffung des benötigten Artikels auf Schrottplätzen und die gebrauchten Teile erhalten neues Leben.

Lokale und globale Unterstützung für die bekanntesten Spieler des Jahres 2024

Das Startup-Ökosystem erhält sowohl lokale als auch internationale Unterstützung. Plug and Play, ein Startup-Beschleuniger aus den USA, wurde vom Ministerium für Wirtschaft und Innovation ins Land gebracht. Das in den USA ansässige Unternehmen soll innerhalb von drei Jahren knapp 6 Millionen Euro in rund 45 Start-ups investieren. Plug and Play führt jedes Jahr über 60 Accelerator-Programme auf vier Kontinenten durch.

Auch von innen erhält das Startup-Ökosystem stetigen Auftrieb. Tomas Okmanas und Eimantas Sabaliauskas, Gründer von Nord Security, dem zweiten Einhorn des Landes, und Tesonet, wurden für ihre kontinuierliche Arbeit zur Erweiterung der Tech-Community als Ökosystemhelden ausgezeichnet. Tesonet hat kürzlich in Vilnius einen Technologiekomplex „Cyber City“ eröffnet. Es ist einer der größten Technologiecampusse in den baltischen Ländern und bringt die Tech-Community an einen Ort und treibt ihr Wachstum voran.

Reiseorientierte Lösungen haben auch in der breiten Öffentlichkeit Fuß gefasst und RatePunk, eine Browser-Erweiterung, zu einem der Startups gemacht, nach denen dieses Jahr Ausschau gehalten wird. Die Erweiterung hilft Reisenden dabei, die besten Hotelpreise zu finden, hat schnell Anhänger gewonnen und wurde daher bei den Awards mit dem Titel „Publikumsliebling“ ausgezeichnet.

Vilnius and Lithuania’s startup ecosystem is bringing innovations in multiple sectors every year. This year’s most prominent players focus on tech, green energy, cleantech, and travel.

January 17, 2024. The Lithuanian startup ecosystem has nearly 900 startups that brought in around EUR 273M of investments in 2023 with cyber security and green energy-focused startups taking the lead. The most prominent players to keep an eye on in 2024 focus on tech, green energy, cleantech, cyber security, and other solutions.

The startups to shake up the industry in 2024 have been awarded at Vilnius TechFusion Startup Awards on January 11. The companies that have contributed to Vilnius and Lithuania’s startup ecosystem growth this year competed in seven categories: Startup of the Year (PVcase), Rising Star (Ovoko), Highlight of the Year (opening of Cyber City), Newcomer of the Year (Plug and Play), Ecosystem Hero (Tomas Okmanas and Eimantas Sabaliauskas), Tech for Good (PVCase) and Public’s Favorite (RatePunk).

Contenders for the next Lithuanian unicorn focus on green capital

Cleantech is gaining traction in the Lithuanian startup ecosystem with 60 companies continuously seeking solutions in transport, clean energy, resources, and other sectors. As the European Green Capital for 2025, Vilnius is giving a strong push for the sector’s startups — six venture capital funds invest up to 2M euros in selected startups, an active network of angel investors funds early-stage promising startups, while numerous programs and projects offer consultations and help.  

With a focus on renewable energy, PVcase is contributing to cleantech innovations by developing software for designing solar plants. The startup was one of the startups with the largest investments last year— the company attracted EUR 100M.

Another startup that focuses on green business practices is Ovoko, one of the largest online B2C marketplaces in Europe. The startup offers a platform to locate and purchase used car parts. This eliminates the hassle of sourcing the needed item from scrapyards and gives new life to used parts.

Local and global support to the most prominent 2024 players

The startup ecosystem is drawing both local and international support. Plug and Play, a startup accelerator from the US, was brought into the country by the Ministry of Economy and Innovation. The US-based company is slated to invest nearly EUR 6M in around 45 startups over three years. Plug and Play implements over 60 accelerator programs on four continents each year.

The startup ecosystem is given a constant boost from the inside as well. Tomas Okmanas and Eimantas Sabaliauskas, founders of Nord Security, the country’s second unicorn, and Tesonet, were recognized as Ecosystem Heroes for their continuous work to increase the tech community. Tesonet has recently opened a technology complex Cyber City in Vilnius. It is one of the largest technology campuses in the Baltic countries and is bringing the tech community to one place and propelling its growth.

Travel-oriented solutions have also found their footing in the general public, making RatePunk, a browser extension, one of the startups to be on the lookout for this year. The extension helps travelers find the best hotel rates and has rapidly gained supporters, therefore winning the Public’s Favorite title in the Awards.
