Energiewende im Alltag: RWE, Großbritanniens führender Stromerzeuger und weltweit führend im Bereich erneuerbarer Energien, hat mit der Co-op Group, einer der weltweit größten Verbrauchergenossenschaften, einen siebenjährigen Stromabnahmevertrag (PPA) abgeschlossen.

(WK-intern) – Im Rahmen dieser Vereinbarung bezieht Co-op Strom aus dem Offshore-Windpark Gwynt y Môr, um seine Lebensmittelgeschäfte, Vertriebszentren und Bestattungsunternehmen in ganz Großbritannien mit Strom zu versorgen.

RWE wird Co-op jährlich mit insgesamt 33 Gigawattstunden (GWh) sauberem Strom beliefern – genug, um rund 140 Co-op-Lebensmittelgeschäfte pro Jahr bzw. 12.200 Haushalte mit Strom zu versorgen.

Die Verbrauchergenossenschaft arbeitet mit RWE zusammen, um den Anteil erneuerbarer Energien zu erhöhen, die sie beschafft, um die nationale Energiesicherheit Großbritanniens zu unterstützen und den Weg zur Dekarbonisierung zu beschleunigen. Co-op hat sich verpflichtet, bis 2035 in allen Betrieben und bis 2040 im gesamten Unternehmen Netto-Null-Emissionen zu erreichen. Im März 2024 war Co-op einer der ersten britischen Convenience-Einzelhändler, dessen Netto-Null-Ziele von der weltweit anerkannten Science Based Targets Initiative (SBTi) bestätigt wurden. In seinem aktualisierten Klimaschutzplan verpflichtete sich Co-op außerdem, erneuerbare Energien über unternehmensweite Stromabnahmeverträge zu beziehen und Lieferanten und Produzenten bei der Reduzierung der absoluten CO2-Emissionen zu unterstützen.

Der Windpark Gwynt y Môr liegt in der Irischen See vor der Küste Nordwales. Er wird von RWE betrieben und ist der größte Offshore-Windpark in Wales. Er umfasst 160 Turbinen mit einer Leistung von 576 Megawatt. Eigentümer des Windparks ist ein Konsortium aus RWE, der Stadtwerke München GmbH und Macquarie GIG.

Energy transition in everyday life: RWE supplies green wind power to the British Co-op Group

RWE, the UK’s leading electricity producer and a global leader in renewable energy, has entered into a seven-year Power Purchase Agreement (PPA) with Co-op Group, one of the world’s largest consumer co-operatives. Under this agreement, Co-op will source electricity produced from the Gwynt y Môr offshore wind farm to help power its estate, including food stores, distribution centres and funeralcare homes across the UK. RWE will supply Co-op with a total volume of 33 gigawatt hours (GWh) of clean electricity annually – which is enough to power the equivalent of around 140 Co-op food stores a year, equal to 12,200 homes.

The consumer co-operative is working in partnership with RWE to increase the amount of renewable energy it procures to support UK national energy security and accelerate its path towards decarbonisation. Co-op has committed to reaching net zero across its operations by 2035 and entire business by 2040. In March 2024, Co-op became one of the first UK convenience retailer to have its net zero targets validated by the globally-recognised Science Based Targets initiative (SBTi). In its updated Climate Action Plan, Co-op further committed to sourcing renewable energy via corporate PPAs and investing in supporting suppliers and producers to reduce absolute carbon emissions.

The Gwynt y Môr wind farm is located in the Irish Sea, off the coast of North Wales. Operated by RWE, it is Wales’s largest offshore wind farm and comprises 160 turbines with a capacity of 576 megawatts. The wind farm is owned by a consortium of RWE, Stadtwerke München GmbH and Macquarie GIG.
