Seit 2002 spielen die Anlagen von Vestas auf der Isle of Wight eine wesentliche Rolle bei der Herstellung von Turbinenblättern für Windkraftprojekte auf der ganzen Welt.

(WK-intern) – Derzeit konzentriert sich unsere Fabrik auf die Herstellung von Rotorblättern für die Offshore-Turbine V174.

Die Nachfrage nach diesem Produkt neigt sich dem Ende zu, und aufgrund der Einschränkungen am Standort ist es für die nächste Generation von Offshore-Rotorblättern nicht geeignet.

Nach einer Grundsatzvereinbarung mit der britischen Regierung beabsichtigt Vestas jedoch, die Fabrik zur Herstellung von Rotorblättern an Land umzufunktionieren, hauptsächlich zur Unterstützung des britischen Marktes. Vestas schätzt es sehr, dass die derzeitige britische Regierung sich bereit erklärt hat, diese Änderung zu ermöglichen.

Mit dieser Umstellung auf Rotorblätter an Land wird die Anlage dazu beitragen, die gestiegene Nachfrage nach Windenergie an Land im Land zu decken, die nach der Entscheidung der Regierung, das faktische Verbot von Windenergie an Land in England aufzuheben, und durch ihren Fokus auf den Aufbau inländischer Lieferketten angekurbelt wurde.

Derzeit sind in den Produktionsbetrieben auf der Isle of Wight etwa 600 Mitarbeiter in den Bereichen Produktion, Logistik und Support beschäftigt. Die grundsätzliche Vereinbarung mit der britischen Regierung zur Umstellung auf neue Aktivitäten wird etwa 300 Arbeitsplätze in der Produktion sichern. Darüber hinaus wird Vestas eine beträchtliche Anzahl von Möglichkeiten in anderen Bereichen unseres Unternehmens bieten. Diese Möglichkeiten umfassen Rollen zur Unterstützung der britischen Betriebe und anderer Vestas-Fabriken.

Unsere Technologieaktivitäten, in denen auf der Insel etwa 140 Mitarbeiter beschäftigt sind, sind von dieser Entscheidung nicht betroffen und bleiben ein Kompetenzzentrum des Unternehmens für Rotorblattforschung, -design und -entwicklung.

Vestas wird nun einen Konsultationsprozess mit Arbeitnehmervertretern einleiten und strebt an, bis Januar 2025 für die meisten Mitarbeiter Klarheit zu schaffen.

Nach der heutigen Ankündigung beschäftigt Vestas weltweit mehr als 33.000 Mitarbeiter und mehr als 1.500 im Vereinigten Königreich in den Bereichen Onshore und Offshore.

Vestas to repurpose Isle of Wight factory, UK, to manufacture onshore blades

Since 2002, Vestas’ facilities on the Isle of Wight have played an integral role in the manufacture of turbine blades for wind projects across the world. At present, our factory focuses on manufacturing blades for the V174 offshore turbine. Demand for this product is coming to an end, and constraints at the site mean it is not suitable for the next generation of offshore blades.

However, following an agreement in principle with the UK Government, Vestas intends to repurpose the factory to build onshore blades, mainly to support the UK market. Vestas greatly appreciates that the current UK Government has leaned forward to enable this change.

This transition to onshore blades will see the facility help meet increased demand for onshore wind energy in the country, which has been boosted following the Government’s decision to remove the de facto onshore wind ban in England and with its focus on building domestic supply chains.

Current manufacturing operations at the Isle of Wight employ approximately 600 people across manufacturing, logistics and support functions. The agreement in principle with the UK government to transition to new activities will sustain approximately 300 jobs in manufacturing activities. In addition, Vestas will offer a significant number of opportunities in other parts of our business. These opportunities will include roles supporting UK operations and other Vestas factories.

Our technology activities which employ approximately 140 people on the island, are not impacted by this decision and will remain a company centre of excellence for blade research, design and development.

Vestas will now go into a consultation process with employee representatives and aims to have clarity for most employees by January 2025.
