It marks GIGA Storage’s first utility-scale battery storage project in Germany. Dortmund – GIGA Storage has brought its 350 MW / 1,400 MWh Project Albatross near Neuenkirchen, Lower Saxony, to Ready to Build status – marking a major milestone for one of Germany‘s largest battery energy storage projects. The utility-scale battery, developed in collaboration with Isenau Projects, will be built on a site adjacent to Amprion’s recently-upgraded 380 kV Merzen substation. The energy-storage facility will consist of 264 battery units and will connect directly to the high-voltage transmission grid. With 350 MW of power and 1,400 MWh of storage capacity, Albatross could supply enough electricity to meet the daily needs of approximately 193,000 households. It will provide additional flexibility to the German electricity system and support the efficient integration of renewable generation and lead to lower energy costs. The Ready to Build milestone signifies the completion of the project’s development phase and clears the way for GIGA Storage to move towards a final investment decision, currently planned for Q4 2026. Construction is expected to begin in the first half of 2027, with commissioning planned for 2028. Albatross is one of three 350 MW / 1,400 MWh German energy storage projects acquired by GIGA Storage from Isenau, including the Pelican and Kingfisher utility-scale batteries. All three projects will be co-developed by the two companies. Kevin Dijkers, CEO of GIGA Storage, said: “Reaching Ready to Build with Project Albatross turns our ambitions in Germany into results. With Projects Pelican and Kingfisher expanding our pipeline here, we’re another step closer to operating multiple gigawatts of storage across Europe.” LONG-TERM PARTNERSHIP IN GERMANY Both the Pelican and Kingfisher projects are planned within the Amprion grid area, with commissioning currently targeted around the end of the decade / early 2030s. Together, the three projects being developed by GIGA Storage and Isenau represent more than 1 GW of power and 4 GWh of energy-storage capacity in Germany. GIGA Storage intends to own and operate the projects over the long term. Both initiators of Isenau Projects, Sven Moos and Tobias Trzeschan, are pleased with the successful partnership. Sven Moos: “We’re delighted to have three high-quality projects underway with GIGA Storage. This development underscores the quality as well as the depth of our productive partnership with GIGA Storage.” Tobias Trzeschan added: “The Albatross project has proven the merits of our approach: to develop efficiently and at pace large-scale BESS projects that meet the needs of the energy market, grid operators and investors.” Lars Josten Calçada, the Project Director Germany for GIGA Storage, said that the development of the German project pipeline is encouraging and a testament to the partnership between the companies. “Both GIGA Storage and Isenau Projects have demonstrated what is required to steer utility-scale battery projects through the development phases, in the fast-emerging utility-scale battery marketplace in Germany.” ABOUT PROJECT ALBATROSS Project Albatross is a planned 350 MW / 1,400 MWh battery energy storage system near Neuenkirchen in Lower Saxony. The site borders Amprion’s 380 kV Merzen substation and will connect directly to the high-voltage transmission grid. The project is planned to comprise 264 battery containers, 96 medium-voltage transformers and two high-voltage transformers. Around 12 hectares of nature compensation measures are planned in the immediate vicinity of the project area.
