TotalEnergies beendet Offshore-Windprojekte in den USA durch Vereinbarungen mit dem US-Innenministerium

• Maximale Gewinne bei den fossilen Energieträgern locken Investoren an

(WK-intern) – TotalEnergies hat mit dem US-Innenministerium (DOI) eine Vereinbarung zur Aufhebung der beiden 2022 vergebenen Pachtverträge für die Offshore-Windparks Carolina Long Bay (Pachtvertrag OCS-A 0545) und New York Bight (Pachtvertrag OCS-A 0538) sowie seiner Partner unterzeichnet.

Damit wird TotalEnergies keine Offshore-Windprojekte mehr in den USA entwickeln.

Im Rahmen der Vereinbarung erhält TotalEnergies die gezahlten Pachtgebühren zurück und investiert einen gleich hohen Betrag in die Entwicklung der US-amerikanischen Gas- und Stromproduktion sowie in den Export von Gas und Strom.

Studien von TotalEnergies zu diesen Pachtverträgen haben gezeigt, dass Offshore-Windprojekte in den USA – anders als in Europa – kostspielig sind und sich negativ auf die Stromkosten für US-Verbraucher auswirken könnten. Da andere Technologien zur Verfügung stehen, um den steigenden Strombedarf in den USA kostengünstiger zu decken, sieht TotalEnergies keine Notwendigkeit, Kapital in diese Technologie in den USA zu investieren.

„TotalEnergies freut sich, diese Vergleichsvereinbarungen mit dem US-Innenministerium (DOI) zu unterzeichnen und die Energiepolitik der Regierung zu unterstützen. Da die Entwicklung von Offshore-Windprojekten nicht im nationalen Interesse liegt, haben wir beschlossen, auf die Entwicklung von Offshore-Windparks in den USA zu verzichten und im Gegenzug die Pachtgebühren erstattet zu bekommen“, sagte Patrick Pouyanné, Vorstandsvorsitzender und CEO von TotalEnergies. „Diese Vereinbarungen, im Rahmen derer wir die zurückerstatteten Leasinggebühren in den Bau der 29 Mio. Tonnen fassenden LNG-Anlage Rio Grande und die Weiterentwicklung unserer Öl- und Gasaktivitäten reinvestieren, ermöglichen es uns zudem, die Entwicklung der US-amerikanischen Gasproduktion und des Gasexports zu unterstützen. Diese Investitionen tragen dazu bei, Europa mit dringend benötigtem LNG aus den USA zu versorgen und Gas für den Ausbau von Rechenzentren in den USA bereitzustellen. Wir sind überzeugt, dass dies eine effizientere Kapitalnutzung in den Vereinigten Staaten darstellt.“

TotalEnergies hat kürzlich außerdem eine Absichtserklärung (Letter of Intent, LOI) mit Glenfarne, dem Hauptentwickler des Alaska-LNG-Projekts, über die langfristige Abnahme von 2 Mio. Tonnen Flüssigerdgas (LNG) pro Jahr über einen Zeitraum von 20 Jahren unterzeichnet. Die Abnahme steht unter dem Vorbehalt der endgültigen Investitionsentscheidung für das Projekt.

TotalEnergies Signs Agreements with U.S. Department of Interior to End its U.S. Offshore Wind Projects

TotalEnergies has signed settlement agreements with the United States Department of the Interior (DOI) to relinquish its Carolina Long Bay lease (Lease OCS-A 0545) and its New York Bight lease (Lease OCS-A 0538), both awarded in 2022, along with its partners. As a result, TotalEnergies will no longer develop offshore wind projects in the United States.

Under the terms of the settlement, TotalEnergies will recover the lease fees paid and will invest an equal amount in the development of U.S. Gas & Power production and exports.

TotalEnergies’ studies on these leases have shown that offshore wind developments in the United States, unlike those in Europe, are costly and might have a negative impact on power affordability for U.S. consumers. Since other technologies are available to meet the growing demand for electricity in the United States in a more affordable way, TotalEnergies considers there is no need to allocate capital to this technology in the U.S.

“TotalEnergies is pleased to sign these settlement agreements with the DOI and to support the Administration’s Energy Policy. Considering that the development of offshore wind projects is not in the country’s interest, we have decided to renounce offshore wind development in the United States, in exchange for the reimbursement of the lease fees,” said Patrick Pouyanné, Chairman of the Board of Directors and Chief Executive Officer of TotalEnergies. “Furthermore, these agreements, under which we will reinvest the refunded lease fees to finance the construction of the 29 Mt Rio Grande LNG plant and the development of our oil and gas activities, allows us to support the development of U.S. gas production and export. These investments will contribute to supplying Europe with much-needed LNG from the U.S. and provide gas for U.S. data center development. We believe this is a more efficient use of capital in the United States.”

TotalEnergies has also signed recently a Letter of Intent (LOI) with Glenfarne, lead developer of the Alaska LNG project, for the long-term offtake of 2 million tons per year (Mtpa) of liquefied natural gas (LNG) over 20 years, subject to the project’s final investment decision.
