Siem Offshore Contractors open Aberdeen office and nominates JDR Cable Systems for the supply of Beatrice OWF inner array grid cables
(WK-intern) – Siem Offshore Contractors GmbH (“SOC”) announced today that UK based JDR Cable Systems Ltd. (“JDR”) has been selected to design, manufacture and supply around 163km of 33kV inner array grid cables for the 588 MW Beatrice Offshore Wind Farm (“OWF”).
JDR has experience in excess of 75 years in the manufacturing of subsea umbilical and submarine power cables, and will be manufacturing the submarine composite cables at its Hartlepool facility. These will be directly loaded out into the turntables on-board SOC’s Cable Lay Vessel Siem Aimery.
It was also announced that SOC (a wholly owned subsidiary of Siem Offshore Inc.) has opened an office in Westhill, Aberdeenshire, Scotland to serve as local project office and act as the focal point for the company’s UK market growth strategy.
“We are pleased to be able to contribute to the growth of Aberdeen’s renewable energy ambitions,” said Andy Martin, SOC’s Project Manager for the Beatrice OWF. It is planned that the office will consist of up to ten full time employees, made up of local workforce where possible supported by head-office staff and key domestic and international subcontractors as required. It is envisaged that future UK contracts will be managed via this office.
In June 2016 SOC announced it had been awarded the contract for the turnkey supply and installation package of the inner array grid cable system for the 588 MW Beatrice OWF by SHL Offshore Contractors BV. SOC will be utilising in-house vessels and resources while leveraging over twenty years’ global experience in the installation of submarine power cables, most recently in the German offshore wind sector.
In addition to the submarine cable installation works, SOC will also provide associated materials and services including the supply of the submarine composite cables, cable protection systems and related accessories as well as post-installation termination, trenching and testing services.
The Beatrice OWF is located approx. 13km of the Caithness coast line in the Outer Moray Firth on the north-western point of the Smith Bank and features 84x 7 MW wind turbines, which will be inter-connected by 91x 33 kV medium voltage alternating current submarine composite cables totalling up to 164 km in length.
The offshore works for the package are due to begin in 2017, with project completion scheduled in 2018.
